Abigail A. Shoultes was born in the eastern regions of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on April 20, 1847. She was the daughter of Peter Adam Shoultes (1821-1856) and Sally Ann Zimmer (1824-1853) and spent her entire childhood in this area. The childhood of Abigail Shoultes must have been very sad. Her mother died from childbirth complications in 1853. Her little brother Chauncey died in 1854 and in 1856, her father and grandfather passed away. According to the United States Census Report of 1860, Abigail resided with the family of Jacob Saddlemire (1783-1867). The relationship of the Saddlemire family to the Shoultes family is not known. Her brother Ira Adam (1844-1922) was living with Uncle Ira (1827-1905) and sister Mary was living with the maternal grandparents, Henry (1804-1880) and Mary (1805-1875) Zimmer. According to documents and family recollections, Abigail and Mary Shoultes contracted the dreaded scarlet fever in 1862. They died 14 days apart in 1862 leaving Ira Adam Shoultes as the only surviving child.
Abigail A. Shoultes died of scarlet fever on September 16, 1862 at the
age of 15 years. She is buried in the family plot at East Newark Cemetery,
near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. |
