CHARLES HENRY SHOULTES was born on April 10, 1863 on the Shoultes farm in the East Newark region of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. He was the fourth child of Ira Jacob Shoultes (21Nov1827-18Apr1905) and Lana Snapp (14Aug1830-11Aug1894). His siblings were: Jacob Henry (2Sep1849-5Nov1851); Emma D. (16Aug1856-4Nov1924) who married Alonzo Baldwin; Frederick Charles (3May1858-23Apr1930) who married Mary L. Dodge; Nancy (17Nov1859-6Jul1916) who married John Niefer; Mary Elizabeth (18Dec1866-11Nov1943) who married Henry W. Stevens; Ella C. (18Mar1868-12Sep1944) who married Frank Westfall; and Chauncey (12Aug1870-12Apr1927) who married 1) Kate Zimmer 2) Mary Brick. Charles grew up on the Shoultes farm and received his education in the East Newark area. The extent of his education is not known. It is noted in the United States Census Report of 1870 for Tioga County that he was attending school and it appears he was able to read and write. Charles is listed on the United States Census Report of 1880 as a farm laborer, probably as a resident of his father's farm. On September 18, 1883 at the Methodist Episcopal Church of East Newark, Charles Shoultes and the former Henrietta E. Zimmer (9Oct1861-25Jun1952) were married. The marriage was recorded in the September 27, 1883 edition of the OWEGO GAZETTE as follows: MARRIED: SHOULTES-ZIMMER At the M.E. parsonage, September 18, 1883 by Rev. T.P. Halstead, Mr. Charles H. Shoultes and Miss Etta E. Zimmer, both of East Newark, N.Y. Henrietta E. Zimmer was born in East Newark on October 9, 1861, the daughter of Daniel Zimmer (1839-1912) and Malvina Settle (1841-1920). Daniel Zimmer was a Civil War veteran serving with the NY 137th at Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea.
Her known siblings were: The Zimmer and Settle families came from Albany County during the settlement period of Newark in the 1830s. The couple joined in the Shoultes family farming enterprise and probably lived near the location of the original Shoultes homestead. Charles and Henrietta gave birth to one son and one daughter. They were very photogenic and some early photographs dating back to the early 1890s were located by a granddaughter. She has graciously allowed the researcher to make copies. Charles and Henrietta Shoultes sold their interest in the Shoultes farm in 1917 and moved into the village of Newark Valley. It is here they made their final home. It is not known, but speculated, that at this point in time, Charles brother Frederick became the sole owner and operator of the Shoultes farm. Charles was mentioned in his father's Last Will and Testament published in 1898 as follows: Fifth, I give and bequeath unto my beloved sons, Chauncey and Charles Shoultes, all the goods and chattels of every kind on my farm, except household furniture, including farming tools, team, stock, wagons, fowl, etc. be divided equally between them. This bequest is made to offset what I have already advanced to my son, Fred Shoultes. Sixthly, I give and bequeath unto my beloved sons, Fred Shoultes, Charles, Shoultes, and Chauncey Shoultes, all of my real estate and the remainder of my personal estate, be divided between them, share and share alike. Following his retirement from farming in 1917, Charles Shoultes recorded his last Will and Testament. The researcher found the document in the records of the Tioga County Surrogates Office at Owego, New York. The will is copied from Book 50, Page 18, and is transcribed as follows: I, Charles H. Shoultes, of the town of Newark Valley, in the County of Tioga, State of New York, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this, my last Will and Testament in the manner following: That is to say, first, I direct that all of my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. Second, I give, devise, and bequeath, all of my property and estate, to whosoever name and nature, and whatever located, unto my wife, Henrietta Shoultes, she to have to use, income arising therefrom, during the term of her natural life, or until such time as she shall remarry, and upon her remarrying, the remaining property and estate shall be equally divided among my two children, Arthur Shoultes and Carrie Daniels, share and share alike. In the event that the income, interest, and use of said property is sufficient to properly support, care for, or maintain my said wife during her natural life, or during such period as she shall remain my widow, I direct that such proportion or portion of the principal sum shall be used as may be necessary to properly support, maintain, and care for, my said widow in the position suitable to her station in life. Lastly, I hereby appoint my wife, Henrietta Shoultes, executrix of this, my last Will and Testament, without bonds, hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness thereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name, this sixth day of August, in the year One Thousand Nine Hundred and Seventeen. Charles Shoultes is well remembered by his descendants who still live in the immediate area of his home. His granddaughter, Evelyn Shoultes Cornwell (1913-1991) located several old photographs of her grandparents and allowed the researcher to make copies. The family bible of Charles and Henrietta Shoultes is still in the possession of Kenneth Frederick Cornwell (1933- ) of Owego (Tioga County), New York. During the summer of 1934, Charles Shoultes injured his foot in an accident. Failing to properly treat the injury (as remembered by his grandchildren), the injury developed serious complications and the foot eventually had to be amputated. Because of gangrene poisoning, Charles Shoultes lost his health and died on October 11, 1934 at the age of 71 years. The October 16, 1934 edition of the OWEGO TIMES recorded his death as follows:
Charles N. Shoultes, a life long resident of Newark Valley, died at his home on Whig Street at 9 o'clock on Thursday night, October 11. He had been ill for several months from embolism and resultant gangrene in the foot. The funeral was held at the Newark Valley M.E. Church, the Rev. James Bartlett officiating and N.P. Lewis in charge, on Sunday at 3 p.m. The deceased was born at East Newark, the son of Ira and Lana Snapp Shoultes, on April 10, 1863. He married Henrietta Zimmer, and most of his life was spent in farming at East Newark, until he purchased a home in the village 17 years ago. He is survived by his widow, and son Arthur, and one daughter, Mrs. Fenton Daniels, both of Newark Valley. He also leaves five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Frank Westfall of East Newark, and Mrs. Henry Stevens of Owego.
Charles Henry Shoultes was laid to rest in the Hope Cemetery, in the
village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. His wife, Henrietta Zimmer
Shoultes joined him on June 25, 1952. |
