Elizabeth Isabell Leip was born in Schoharie County, New York on February 17, 1798. She was the daughter of Georg Frederick Leip (1776-????) and the granddaughter of Johannes Leip (????-????) and Elizabeth Bassler (7Jul1756-????) of Albany County, New York. She appears to have spent her childhood near Schoharie. The Leip name appears prominent in early New York and Pennsylvania history and also appears as Lipe and Lippe. Elizabeth Isabell Leip united in marriage with Jacob Ira Shoultes around the year 1819. Jacob Shoultes (8Feb1798-25May1856) was the youngest son of Johan Jacob Scholtes (6May1761-1Feb1852) and Mariah Fischer (1760?-1Jun1839) and was born in the town of Knox (Albany County), New York on February 8, 1798. It is believed that the young couple took residence at the Scholtes family farm during the first few years of their marriage. Jacob Ira Shoultes was one of the early pioneer spirits of the Scholtes family. In 1825, he moved his family 150 miles west to the Tioga County settlement of Newark. Many of the Berne families made this move during the 1820s. The lands in Tioga County were free from the ancient Patroon system with did not allow direct ownership of property. Jacob and Elizabeth Shoultes established a farm in the East Newark region near the settlement of Newark and raised a family of ten children.
Following Jacob's death in 1856, Elizabeth took residence with her son
Ira Jacob Shoultes (1827-1905). She died on April 17, 1872 at the age of
74 years. She is buried in the East Newark Cemetery near the village of Newark
Valley (Tioga County), New York. |
