Emaline Shoultes was born on November 2, 1825 near the settlement of Newark (Tioga County), New York. She was the third child, and appears to have been the only daughter of the ten children born to Jacob Ira Shoultes (8Feb1798-25May1856) and Elizabeth Isabell Leip (17Feb1798-17Apr1872).
Her siblings were: Emaline was the first Shoultes child born since the family left the village of Knox (Albany County), New York sometime during 1825. It is believed that Emaline Shoultes grew up on the family farm in the East Newark regions of Tioga County. There is no record indicating that she received any formal education. Emaline Shoultes united in marriage with George Snapp (1817-1882) during the early 1840s. The exact date and location of the marriage is not known but it probably took place near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. George Snapp was born on February 1, 1817, location unknown. He was probably the son of Jacob (1785-1876) and Sophia (????-1871) Snapp, who were early settlers to this region of Tioga County. George and Emaline Snapp established a farm in East Newark. There are six documented children and probably more. George Snapp died on November 14, 1882 at the age of 65 years. He was buried in the East Newark Cemetery near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. It is speculated that Emaline Shoultes Snapp remained on the farm until her death from heart failure on February 17, 1899 at the age of 73 years. She is buried in the family plot with her husband.
NOTES FROM: Jean Calverley George and Emeline Snapp were my great grandparents. My grandmother, Velma Chrysler was the daughter of Mary and Oscar Chrysler. Mary was the daughter of George and Emeline. I am new at genealogy and have not started researching this side of my family but do have my grandmother's scrapbook and have done a brief outline of the family from articles in this old book. I was born and grew up in Newark Valley and have known Shoultes and Snapps all my life but didn't know the connection before. However, it has been many years since I lived there and do not know many of the families there now but do correspond with one old friend who may be able to get up-to-date information on them. My records show there were eight children, Myra, Etta, Frank, Edward, Henry, Elber, George and Mary. I have some dates of birth and death and will try to organize this for you if you would like it. How are you connected to the family? I also have my grandmother's autograph book and some of the connections were made through this. I also knew the Zimmer family quite well but don't know who is left there now but might be able to find out. I do so want to go back and visit that East Newark Valley cemetery, I think it was near the house where I was born. I just received this computer for a Christmas present and what a surprise to find someone wanting information about this lovely little area of New York State! Here is the obit for Emeline Snapp. Will just send this one and await your package to see what else I have that may be of interest to you. Thanks so much and I am sure this will help in my research for my mother's family. Wasn't Stacy Shoultes a barber in NV? Written in at top of Obit: Feb, 1899 Mrs. Emeline Snapp, whose illness we have mentioned several times, died at the home of her daughter, near Union Centre, Friday morning of last week. She had been gaining rapidly and was able to sit up a considerable, but Wednesday was taken with neuralgia and lived less than two days. The funeral took place from her old home in East Newark, Monday afternoon. Rev. J.B. Cook officiating, assisted by Rev. A.O. Austin of Union Centre. As Emeline Shoultes, she was born Nov. 2, 1835 (should be 1825), at East Newark, on the farm where her brother, Ira Shoultes, now lives, and as her life has been spent in that vicinity, she was well known and most highly respected by all. For many years she was a member of the M.E. Church. Her husband, Geo. Snapp, died some 16 years ago, and for a number of years she has made her home with her son, Ed, but when taken sick happened to be visiting her daughter. She leaves ...................
And I am very sorry but the rest of the article is missing. I think it
was continued in another column in the newspaper and over the years has probably
come loose and fallen out of the book. I noticed that the birth year was
different from what you had. It is not my typo, I did check this, but could
have been wrong in the paper. |
