Kate Zimmer was born at Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on August 5, 1871. She was the daughter of Ransom Zimmer (1840-????) and Martha Saddlemire (1848-????) and is descended from one of the early pioneer families from Albany County. Her siblings were: Orrin (1863-????); Thaddius (1869-1953); Azuba (1873-1936); Gracia (1875-????) and Bryant (1879-????). The complete Zimmer genealogy is not known at the time of this writing but it is noted that the Zimmer name appears frequently in the Shoultes genealogical history. Kate Zimmer married Chauncey Shoultes (1870-1927) in the early 1890s. The exact date and location is not known. Chauncey Shoultes was born on August 12, 1870, the youngest of the eight children belonging to Ira Jacob Shoultes (1827-1905) and Lana Snapp (1830-1893). Chauncey's grandparents were Jacob Ira Shoultes (1798-1856) and Elizabeth Isabell Leip (1798-1872) who settled the East Newark regions in 1825 coming from Albany County. Chauncey and Kate became partners within the Shoultes farming enterprise during their early years. In later years, they maintained a farming residence along the Jenksville Road in West Newark. There were no children born to them. Kate Zimmer Shoultes developed severe medical problems and appeared to have suffered a crippling stroke in 1920. Her condition worsened and she died on July 31, 1921. The August 4, 1921 edition of the OWEGO GAZETTE recorded her life as follows: The funeral of Mrs. Chauncey Shoultes is to be held at her home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W.W. Watrous of Union officiating. Burial in Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Shoultes had suffered from the effects of a shock, which she had about six weeks ago. She leaves her husband, Chauncey Shoultes, an aged father, Ransom Zimmer, of East Newark, and one sister, Mrs. Ollie Zimmer of this place, and two brothers, Thad Zimmer and Orin Zimmer.
Kate Zimmer Shoultes is buried in the family plot at Hope Cemetery, in
the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. |
