Details of her childhood are not known.

Date unknown, Mary A. Greene married Seymour Lyman Shoultes (1841-1915) of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. Seymour Lyman Shoultes was born on August 22, 1841 at Newark Valley, the youngest of the ten children belonging to Jacob Ira Shoultes (1798-1856) and Elizabeth Isabell Leip (1798-1872). Their marriage may have taken place in Wisconsin.

According to records, Seymour Shoultes enlisted as a soldier in the Union Army in 1861. He spent three months at Camp Rathbone near Albany, then is recorded as a deserter. He later enlisted with Company G, 25th Wisconsin Infantry and saw action with General Sherman in Georgia and South Carolina. After the war, the couple established a farm in Maxville, Wisconsin. Two of their three children were born in Wisconsin.

Around the year 1870, the family returned to New York and established a small farm near the village of Union Center (Broome County), New York. In close proximity with Seymour's brother Elijah (1835-1912), the couple worked the farm and remained in this area for the rest of their married life. Mary's later years were spent in the village of Lestershire (Johnson City - Broome County), New York.

Seymour Shoultes died on April 14, 1915 at the age of 74 years. The following passages are taken from the last Will and Testament published on February 1, 1904.
