Melvin Ozeas Shoultes was born on September 19, 1868 near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. He was the first child of Ira Adam Shoultes (12Oct1844-5Mar1922) and Nancy M. Schoolcraft (7Oct1841-10Jan1921) and grew up in the East Newark region. It is believed that he attended the local schools and received some elementary education.

In 1891, Melvin O. Shoultes united in marriage with the former Dora I. Quick (27Nov1872-14Jan1957). Dora I. Quick was born at Glen Aubrey, New York on November 27, 1872, the daughter of Abraham Quick (1821-17Nov1886) and Mary Moore (1843-Jan1904). Her siblings included Adelbert who married Lena DeGarromore; Allen; Orville; Frederick W. (15Aug1858-1932) who married Mary Pitcher; Ora E. (1868-23Dec1869); and William (1870-1932) who married Ann Isenberg.

Melvin and Dora Shoultes established a home on Franklin Avenue in the village of Newark Valley. Melvin was a long-time employee of Bordon's Creamery in the village. One son was born to them.

Melvin Shoultes, or "Mel and Dorie" as they are remembered, were recalled by the grandmother of the author. Martha Jane Brougham Shoultes (20Feb1901-22Jan1988) remembered visits to their home to play cards during the 1920s. She also recalled that Mel had a "lopsided head."

Melvin Ozeas Shoultes died of a heart attack on June 15, 1927 at the age of 58 years. His death was recorded in the OWEGO GAZETTE issue of June 21, 1927 and was written as follows:

Melvin O. Shoultes, a prominent resident of Newark Valley, and a valued employee for many years at the Bordon plant, died at his home on Franklin Avenue, Wednesday, June 15, at 6 o'clock, from heart disease, from which he had been incapacitated for several weeks. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon, at the home, the Rev. W.E. Elwood officiated. N.P. Lewis was in charge.

He was born at East Newark, September 19, 1868, the son of Ira and Nancy Schoolcraft Shoultes. He married Dora Quick, 36 years ago, who survives him. He leaves a son, William Shoultes, of Binghamton, and a little granddaughter, Vivian Shoultes, who the grandparents have had since a baby. He was a member of the Ahwage Tribe, IMP O.R.M. of this village.

Melvin Ozeas Shoultes is buried with his wife and son, in the Hope Cemetery located in the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York.
