Rebecca Brougham was born at Owego (Tioga County), New York on January 11, 1840. She was the daughter of Joseph Brougham (????-????) and Maria Kaley (????-????) and probably grew up in the village of Owego. Her siblings were: Catherine (????-????) who married John Martin Hoose; Elizabeth (????-????) who married Edward Whitmarsh; Peter (1832-????) who married Sallie Whitmarsh; and Eliza (1837-1906) who married Henry Leroy Springer. Rebecca Brougham was first married to Chancy Whitmarsh (????-????). The Whitmarsh genealogy is not known at the time of this writing. It is believed that she was widowed. Rebecca Brougham united in marriage with widower George Jacob Shoultes (1839-1904) at Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on October 25, 1895. George Jacob Shoultes was born near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on June 20, 1839. He was the ninth child of Jacob Ira Shoultes (1798-1856) and Elizabeth Isabell Leip (1798-1872) and grew up on the family farm in East Newark. George Shoultes was previously married to Catherine Zeh (1845-1891) who died in 1891. It is not known if Rebecca Brougham had been previously married but records provided from the settlement of her estate name a Lanson H. Whitmarsh as a son and a Delphine Slocum as a daughter. Both were cited to appear in the Surrogate's Court on the 16th day of April, 1909. Lanson Whitmarsh is shown as a resident of Lestershire (Johnson City, Broome County), New York and Delphine Slocum is residing in Auburn (Cayuga County), New York. There is also a document dated 19Dec1910 in which Charles L. Pitcher and Lewis Brougham, both residents of Union Center, NY appeared. The relationship of these people is not known at the time of this writing. George and Rebecca Shoultes lived on the family farm and enjoyed the prosperity of the family operation. In the OWEGO GAZETTE issue of March 14, 1901, an interesting article telling the stories of some of the early pioneer families appeared. The following was the story of the Shoultes family, as it pertained to George J. Shoultes. George J. Shoultes - son of Jacob Shoultes, was born June 20, 1839, in East Newark. He was married February 16, 1865 to Catherine Zee, daughter of Christopher Zee, of Newark Valley. She was the mother of two children: Ezra L. and Alice Shoultes. He married second October 25, 1895 to Rebecca Brougham, daughter of Joseph Brougham of Owego. She was born January 10, 1840. Mr. Shoultes is a farmer and is also enjoying life in a pleasant home in East Newark.
George Jacob Shoultes died from Brights Disease on February 1, 1904 at
the age of 64 years. It is believed that Rebecca Brougham Shoultes remained
on the farm until her death on April 8, 1909 at the age of 69 years. They
are buried in a family plot located in the East Newark Cemetery, near the
village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. |
