Vera Rhoda Shoultes was born at Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on January 12, 1895. She was the first child of Erman Francis Shoultes (1872-1920) and Rhoda Euneth Henry (1876-1920). It is believed that most of her childhood was spent in the village of Newark Valley. She received a substantial education from the local schools.

The tragic death of her mother in 1912 made a dramatic change to the family. It appears that the family split. Erman's whereabouts and capabilities to care for the family are not known. Vera took care of her younger brother Stacey (30Jul1907-1Feb1960) and Jay (22Jul1899-10Oct1975) and Paul (11Apr1897-10Dec1944) established bachelor quarters.

Vera Rhoda Shoultes united in marriage with Roy Tuttle (1893-1983) of Owego on December 27, 1915. They established their residence in Owego (Tioga County), New York. It is believed that Stacey lived with them until reaching the age of adulthood. The author also remembers his grandfather Jay stating that he lived with them for a time. Vera was employed as a teacher in Owego. They had a son born to them in 1918.

Vera, or "Aunt Puss" as she is remembered by surviving members of the family, appears to be a person of high regard. The author has heard many kind references about her from his grandfather, father, aunts and uncles. The families of Owego were very close.

Vera Rhoda Shoultes Tuttle died of cancer on November 15, 1944 at the age of 49 years. Her death was not expected and apparently was taken hard by her brothers. The November 16, 1944 edition of the OWEGO GAZETTE recorded her death as follows:

MRS. ROY TUTTLE

Mrs. Vera R. Tuttle, wife of Roy Tuttle, of the Jones district in the town of Tioga, died at 10:20 o'clock on Wednesday morning, November 15, at Ideal Hospital at Endicott, aged 49 years. She had been a patient at this hospital for a little more than a week previous to her death.

Her funeral will be held at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon at the Richards Funeral Home in the town of Tioga. The Rev. Floyd F. Richards of Newark Valley will officiate. The burial will be in Tioga Cemetery.

Mrs. Tuttle was the daughter of Herman (Erman) and Rhoda (Henry) Shoultes and was born on Jan. 12, 1895 at Newark Valley. She had lived in the town of Tioga the last 25 years. Besides her husband, Mrs. Tuttle leaves one son, Gerald Tuttle of the town of Tioga, two brothers, Jay and Paul Shoultes of this village, and Stacey Shoultes who is with the armed forces in France, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
